What can one way about an ersatz church that claims to be an exact reproduction of one in Jerusalem and takes itself totally seriously? There are catacombs beneath the church with collection boxes at every entrance and exit. Within are clumsy mosaics, terrible sculptures and frescos worthy of a grade school project. In the gift store they not only sell Franciscan Frisbees but also “authentic” crowns of thorns.
